  • Body / Glass: Fenders for 56 Power Hawk

    Folks,
Body shop started stripping the bondo out of the 56 hawk and found that under the bondo was chicken wire. So.... does anyone know where I can find front left and right fenders? I checked with SI and they do not have them.
    Thanks in Advance!

They still show up from time to time on e-bay and at Studebaker swap meets but they are not an item you can just pick up the phone to order from a vendor. They have been known to sell for as much as $1200.00 a pc. for NOS. Someone that frequents this Forum may have some.

Wow, May be worth repairing what we have.

Classic Enterprises sells patch panels for the areas that usually suffer most from rust. They have a 5" wide front fender patch for the area that meets up with the front door for $75 http://www.classicent.com/coupes_hawks.php among other things. Maybe that will work for you.

How about considering fiberglass replacement fenders? One of the companies that makes them is in your part of the country. If you could pick them up, that would save a lot on hard to ship items. I have used fiberglass fenders on a C/K and was pleased, but mine came from another manufacturer. Most companies make them in two weights/thicknesses - light weight for race use and heavy weight for driver use.

I have a pair of used right and left fiberglass fenders that came off of my '54 Starlight coupe. They are in excellent condition and currently painted Chadron Red. They would have to be picked up in Woodbridge, VA. $400 for the pair.

Do the 54 Starlight fenders match the 56 power hawk. I thought the Hawk fenders were different?

Others can correct me if I'm wrong, but the front fenders in the Hawk line (and the '53 Starliner and Starlight are the beginning of what we can refer to as the Hawk line) are interchangeable from '53 all the way to '64. The only difference is in whether and where holes are drilled for moldings and ornaments. The fenders I have are not drilled for moldings or ornaments, as the'53 and '54 did not have any moldings or ornaments on the fenders.

I do not remember who the manufacturers/vendors of the fiberglass fenders are. They have been discussed on this Forum. Either do a search for fiberglass fenders here or search in Google, Ask, etc. IIRC, one manufacturer/seller is in North Carolina.

The fenders are the "same", but they typically come with the inner panels, which require quite a lot of modification, in the front grille section. Those front grill sections can be transferred from the Power Hawk fenders, but it is a task, as there are many spot welds to deal with, not to go into the alignment of the inner panels to the fenders.
