  • Engine: 55 commander engine color

I have a 55 2dr hardtop thats coraltone and black which my understanding is that it would be a late 55 spring model. Question is - The motor seems to be a turquoise color more than a dark blue so could that be correct as having the 56 paint. A lot of the engine hasClick image for larger version

To: jazinn---- Yes, that engine color would be unique to the '55 models. It may have been called 'Alberta Blue' but anyway, Your right-- it's kind of a blue green. Definitely not the '56 color

I don't like to give a differing opinion here BUT, from the limited amount of paint we have to interpret here, I would have to agree with jaxinn.

This appears to me to be the '56-'57 Turquoise GREEN, NOT Dark Alberta Blue as MOST '55's had, there would be NO Green in it at all.

There have been rumors that a few late '55's got the '56 Green however.

How late in the 1955 model year was your car built and on which assembly line. If you do not have the information from the car's build sheet, post the car's Serial Number, on the driver's door post, and we will interpret it.
EDIT: Also post the stamped engine number and we will check to see that it is, in fact, a 1955 model engine.

The paint on 'jazinn's' transmission really does look blue, but I don't think it's anywheres near the '56 color. Now, I have a DG250M which I removed from a Speedster last July. I think I'm looking at original paint here,
and it seems to be a much darker blue with a definite green tone to it. The standard transmission in My own Speedster also has the same color I'm describing. The Jurys is still out on this one I guess!
( if anyone has use for a DG250M, I have one I'd love to part company with, but still, I hate to scrap it.- Must pick up.

SN do you see the colors in my post above as GREEN and BLUE? They are not far from the actual colors, if not it could be your eyes playing tricks on you.

This is the 1955 blue spray paint sold be SI

I decided to go with the 1955 blue spray paint from SI. It is very close to the engine color of most of the 1955s I saw at the National meet last June in Springfield. I think the original color may have been a little lighter but the convenience of the spray can is very nice.

Tell You what StudeRich, come pick up this DG250M and You'll be able to see the correct Studebaker color! I'm really not that fussy about engine color. A close match is usually good enough for Me, but I
think jazinn actually wants to know what should be on His '55 engine, and Your pretty computer colors aren't even close! And the dance goes on......................................

To: Charlie D-----Nice looking engine! What model '55 are You restoring? I see the four-barrel, so thought it might be in the President series? Stick or Auto?

1955 President State Sedan early straight windshield model. DG250M. I have another set of valve covers that can be painted gold later on with the Wildcat decal. One of the hardest goals so far in the project was to fill the tranny without it dripping any. I drained it four times to accomplish that. I talked with Herman Thoms at the National meet and he gave me some advice. Eric West gave me some very good advice and It has been filled now for over two months without a drip.

To: Charlie D. '55 President State Sedans are one of My favorite Studebakers. My Dad brought home a second series President State in January of 1955. It really outclassed the run-of-the mill Fords and
Chevys most everyone drove back then! Those full disc wheelcovers with the gold centers impressed someone so much they were stolen off the car before it was a month old! What color (colors) will Your car be?
By the way, if You ever need them, I have a really nice used left grille end, and also a nice used tailamp housing for that model (not sure what side)

The serial # on the car is 84I8346 and is a south bend car. Tha model of the car is 16G8-K5. not sure but I think the engine # is V351775. The car was owned locally and only had 1 previous owner so I think the trans color is probably correct. The engine had pontiac blue sprayed on the easy to get to areas and the back of it was the same color as the trans. The engine and trans are being rebuilt and I was thinking Click image for larger version

To: jazinn,--- Do You see the remaining color on the block just below the left cylinder head ? That's the true color--the slightly greenish- blue I was trying to describe. Notice how different it looks from the
blue color (Pontiac?) on the accelerator linkage. Thanks for posting this picture as it should help other folks that may be trying to get the correct color on their '55 Studebaker engines.
