  • Engine: Aluminum timing gear question

My brother is planning to put an R-2 cam in his engine. Today he was cleaning up the aluminum timing rear that he planned to use with the cam and noticed that it has a snap ring around the inside of the front surface opposite the gear teeth. Why would there be a snap ring there?

Your Cam gear is an Original factory 1685777 Alcoa Gear, all originals have the balancing or stiffening steel ring, not really a "Snap" ring. I had to guess on the reason though, I am not sure of that, all I know is every original one I have ever seen has one so I would not worry about it, only reproductions have none, considerer your brother as LUCKY!

I'll try to get a picture Frank. I was concerned at first that it might not be a gear for a Studebaker, but Joe actually removed himself from an engine he got in a trade.

          52 -

If you're interested, around the middle of January, there will be a new "timing adjustable" cam gear on the market. It will be simillar to most other adjustable gears for Chevy's Fords, etc.
They should cost about the same as the current aluminum gears.

It is NOS but poorly stored for 25 years, you can see the "Steel Ring" in the groove on the front side only.

I was not doubting the man Rich, I just had never seen one, since we sold our NOS cam gears out years ago. (G)

I installed an original aluminum timing gear in my 62 Hawk many years ago and it has the steel ring in it. I believe it is to stop the ringing noise associated with the aluminum gears. I have installed the new stock gears in several engines and they can always be heard when the engine is running, the gear in my Hawk is quiet. Bud
