Front Axle / Front Suspension: Rubber O-Ring vs Cork gasket

Never had a failure, and o'ring is all I have used for years. I recently refurbished the front suspension on a GT Hawk that had about 150,000 miles and 15+ years since last refurbishment. The o'rings were square but still pliable; probably coulda re-used them, but of course installed new ones. Lester Schmidt turned me on to the o'ring trick many years ago.

Not somethiang I did. I'm having to redo for a customer and I was wondering if anyone had this problem before, or if perhaps it was something someone else screwed up? First one of these I've come across like this.

Bo,
I've probably done 10 of these kits with the o-rings. no failures that I know of, I don't see how they'd be a problem. IMHO I'd think the o-rings will far out perform the cork, unless as mentioned in a previous post that the needle bearing wasn't installed far enought but thats a GUESS.
