I am surprised they are putting the flywheel and clutch on with the block still open and unpainted. Or is this just a trial assembly? Still I guess this would be as easy as it can possibly get to dial in the bell housing and align the clutch.

Yes, indeed, on both points... I would have at least installed the pan, which would have required installing the pistons and rods and the rest of the lower end components.
