  • Frame / Springs: Where to order front springs

I need new front springs for my 55 president state sedan. The old ones were full of those aluminum spacer things you screw in with a jack handle & they are still way too low to keep from scrapping an uneven road.

Where do most of you get your springs? There was someone at South Bend selling a set this year, but by the time I saw them, I had blown way too much money. In hindsight, I should have made that 2nd trip to the ATM.
    thanks,
    Mike Sal

    Coil Spring Specialties

Here you go Mike, these people are the BEST! A family run business in St. Mary's Kansas U.S.A. that knows their springs!

They have all of the specs, part numbers etc. to copy ANY Studebaker Front Coil Spring exactly, or custom build to the firmness or height requirements you want for your car.
Once you have tried them as we have, you will never go anywhere else!

I dunno- but don't fall victim to the 'one size fits all' sets out there.

Get the right ones and be happy forever. I did, and never looked back~

Mike, I have a good used st out of a 55 C/K you can have if they will fit your sedan and if you are interested. You know where i am. For the work involved in replacing the springs, I am not sure you want to put in used ones but thought I would offer

I got mine from Coil Spring Specialties on Dave's advice, and they are awesome! And if you think that's expensive, try ordering from Eaton Detroit

Mike......I bought front springs for a 2R5 from Eaton Detroit and was pleased with their product and thought the price was reasonable. Delivered right to my front door.

My leaf springs came from there, too.
But when I asked about coils- they were less then helpful.

The thing that really bugs me is I know I've got a good set of springs around here somewhere, but who knows where I put them 10 years ago.....

Milt, are you going to be around this weekend? We're planning to go to the Bob's Stone Fort this weekend with the Effingham & Evansville chapters. Maybe I could swing by Saturday evening instead of heading back east. Have you been to the fort before? It's a pretty cool place.

                      http://www.espo.com/ perhaps?

A couple of years ago I ordered up a set of coil and leaf springs for a late 1960's Rambler American and was quite happy with them.

Ya know, I forgot all about espo. I ordered springs for all 4 corners for my J10 jeep truck from them about 10 years ago. Good service & the springs worked out ok (of course they were leaf springs).

Those guys were the ones I tried first. They were a bit cheaper then other folks I had called- so I gave then a shot. When the springs arrived they were useless for my car!!! Luckily I had good mechanics and they noticed what they took out looked NOTHING like the ones these folks made for me. Since they were too big for paperweights, I tried to return them~ and learned that their customer service was about as useless as their springs!!!

After all was said and done~ I learned that you get what you pay for, and the folks in Kansas were worth what I paid.
(and I plan to order more from them very soon!!!)

Hmmmm....sounds like the integrity of their business may have deteriorated over the last 10 years, or maybe they are only competent doing leaf springs..... I had good luck with them on the Jeep springs.

My dealings with them would've been about 10-12 years ago. The probem was that the coils they sent me were not flat on top and bottom like a Stude needs to be for proper installation.
