• Good source for vaccum advance on '56 V8

Apparently, the vaccum advance is shot on 'ol Bess. The one off my '52 is just as bad. So, I need a new one. Any suggestions? SI doesn't list them and I can't call SASCO today.

The application is a 259 V8 '56 Commander engine.
The distributor cap says Delco Remy 13 inside. Or:

Delco
made in
USA
Remy

on the opposite side, facing the opposite way;

13

This is related to the trouble shooting I'm doing with Bess' popping or carb-backfire problem. I've cleaned out the float-bowl vent (no problem I could see) and will be changing the spark plugs today.
It's been suggested to me that the timing gear could have jumped a gear, or be worn out. This seems unlikely to me as the car starts (one or possibly two turns of the motor cold) easily, and idles beautifully. It can be driven, but, whenever there's a load or incline, will pop and kick. One time it even backfired when I shut it off. Just the once though. I've been able to move it to either side of Lewiston, a trip of a mile or two, without serious problems. Still, I'm unable to climb any of the passes out of the valley.

So, suggestions are welcome.[8)]

Never heard of it. What, or who, is T-Bow?

In the '60's when I worked for a C&&y dealer I worked on a car that would idle good, and run good 'till you loaded the engine and it would do the same things you describe. The plugs looked new, and I even re-gapped them, same problems, but a new set cured the problem.
If you changed them today I guess you already know the answer.

Have you got another coil available? Maybe the coil is breaking down under load.

Ron I suspect your problem is an extreme lean problem or poissibly electrical but it isn't the vacuum advance as long as it was hooked properly and timed accordingly. good luck also if there any #'s on your advance you can probably cross reference thru delco

They refer to a fellow called Dave Thibeault if I spelled that correctly, he makes parts for Studebakers or reconditions them probably both

Oooooh! You mean Dave? Yeah, I should have caught that. Thebeault would be pronounced T-bow. Duh![:I] Well, I never claimed to be a genius. I'll call him tomorrow.

If they are the same as the 57 Silverhawk they are a bugger to find. I happen to have one. Just because I looked for over two years to come up with it. Didn't want to pay 85 to 120 dollars for the ones that I did find. Anyhow I will take a picture of the one I have tommorrow and post. Then if its the one you need. I'll see if its available. Phil Harris found the one that I have for me.

Ron,
Have you done any testing on the vacuum advance? If you suck on the hose going to it, does the plate move? Does it hold vacuum?

I think it's unlikely that even a completely non working vacuum advance would cause that severe a running problem.

Also, I think it's impossible for a Stude to jump a tooth on the timing gear. I can sorta kinda visualize it on a SBC with a very sloppy timing chain, but can't see that happening even with worn gears on a Stude.

Keep troubleshooting the fuel and ignition systems. Don't throw parts at it. You'll find the culprit [^].

Yeah, Dave had the VA. Yeah, I tested it, Dick. It moved and the armature also moved. Still, it wouldn't hold vacuum. I'm going to change out the plugs and coil today. After all, the current ones are over twenty years old. I'd say probably close to thirty.
