  • Clutch / Torque Converter: Torque converter stator pictures for comparison

On what has become known as The Golden Hawk from Hell I need some help identifying a problem. I had the torque converter rebuilt after the previous rebuilt one with only 250 miles had a broken sprag. I have it installed and aligned but found the transmission would not go completely in. My transmission man drove 160 miles to help me
install it only to find that we still could not get it installed. In searching for the problem he noticed small dents on the transmission shaft and concluded that the stator
is probably in backwards. It appears that the splines on the stator should be toward the front of the car rather than toward the rear as pictured.
I am hoping someone can confirm this as I will need to send it back to be repaired under warranty. I can hardly wait to tear it out again.
Pictures or confirmation are appreciated. Thanks

They put the torque converter together backwards? What is the rebuild business coming to? Yikes!!

Yes, they did put the stator section in backwards, the splined section should be towards the engine, the unsplined section toward the rear. Probably happened because the assembler was not familiar with this unit, put the old timers on it , leave the children to the e40d's, 4l60's and such. Lou Cote

Thanks for confirming our suspicions. Now the fun begins again.

Precision of New Hampton did the work and the tech was obviously careless. They will do no more than pay for shipping. And it only cost me $386.50 + my shipping, the install, removal and install again time, the frustration and time when trying to install the tranny, renting the alignment tool, having my transmission guy drive 300 miles yesterday to try to install, and so on. Kinda pisses me off.
I'm glad I wasn't paying someone to do the work.
Might want to keep this in mind if you are having a TQ rebuilt.

I think (Lack of) Precision of New Hampton needs an explicitly strong letter from an attorney to change their minds. Whatever form of payment you used may be reversible, especially if it was a credit card. It's time to but a stop to careless workmanship and lack of responsibility.

How can a rebuilder refuse to fix what they put together backwards????

I think they are refusing any labor claim. They certainly have to fix the converter at least.

Dwain, the OP says the rebuilder will do NO MORE than pay for shipping.

When the rebuilder gets it back and sees the job that was done and how it was done, the boss will probably change his mind and make it good. He probably cannot believe that one of his employees did such a dumb thing.

Clarification - they will redo the converter and pay for the shipping - nothing else.

That's pretty much the way most parts guarantees work. I'm not aware of any guarantees that pay for inconvenience or labor.
