    DG250 or Flightomatic, 53 Coupe

At one point I am going to begin to reassemble the 53 Coupe. It had a 63 289 and Flightomatic in it. The engine and transmission are out of it right now. I have a spare DG250 transmission. I also have a 1st gear module for the Flightomatic. Question then is this. Which would be a better setup? The 250 has the first gear start. I have the 1st gear module for the Flightomatic but am unsure if I can install it correctly to make it work. The rear diff is a Dana 44, 3.31, Twin traction with finned brakes.

Pros and cons for each setup?

If it were me, I'd go with a conversion to a 700R4 or 2004R. The advantages are 4 speeds + overdrive and a modern (F*rd Bronco in my case) starter. I can go 70 mph all day long with my 259/700R4/3.42 rear end.

If I had to stay with the two suggested above I would prefer the Flightomatic with first gear start, especially with the 3.31.

At this time I am not feeling a big modification. I have driven my 51 with 232 and DG200 at 70 without too much trouble. I agree though a 700R is a great way to go. I have done a couple of them on trucks. I have the first gear module for the Flightomatic I just do not know if I have the skill to make it work.

Sounds like the 289 and flightomatic are already mated. I am guessing that the FOM is a long tailshaft and you already have a one piece driveshaft that works. If you use the DG, you will need a new driveshaft, possibly two piece.

As long as you have it, stick with 289 and FMX (Flightomatic) Be sure you dial indicate bell housing-- see Jim Peppers recent article in TW. Also see if you can find a "bat-wing support for pillar post. (FMX are 'bullet proof') Our Hawk shows 2100 rpm at 55 mph with a 3.31 rear end so OD trans with 3.31 might be iffy.
