Deleted my Photobucket account.

Just deleted my Photobucket account, so any links in old posts of mine will no longer work. I did download all the photos back into my hard drive, so if anyone needs them, I have them.

Would be interesting to see how their policy changes impacted their overall numbers and if the person who made the call for that dramatic change has gotten their pink slip yet...

I kept my (free) account. All the pics are still there and can be posted on the forum. There was a time when they disconnected all links and it was tough or impossible to view your own pictures. That has changed.

The downsides are that they serve up A LOT of ads on their site and they put a hokey watermark on pictures you post...



I've not added any pictures to my PhotoBucket account...I've been using Flickr for many years...but my PhotoBucket pics are still there if I need to share one.

Consider yourself lucky you were able to retrieve your photos. I could not download them and lost many photos from my posts.

Flickr is doing the same extortion and I suspect they will be adding watermarks soon as well.

Lately in my post I upload to the forum..

Once you have uploaded the photos, go to advance and preview the photos.

"Right click" on the photo and select "Open in new tab"

copy the url at the top of the new tab. Should look like this..

Then place the IMG and /IMG tag around the link...

Then you can get the big picture to show in your post and have the forum keep the photo..



If you upload many picture, they are in sequence (82501, 82502, 82503, etc.)

Its easy to just copy and past multiple lines of the same link and just change the ID

Jeeze.
I downloaded all my 14,000 pic's years ago, and have turned by back on them...cold.
Went to Imgur, and they have changed their format to make it less user friendly, but still functional.

Great trick! Thanks. Since the photo you post from your computer is now on the internet when you load it to the forum, you are essentially just linking back to the full size picture you loaded. Brilliant!

As far as on line photo album services, we really can't expect "free". There is no way they can keep the lights on if there isn't a revenue stream. It's either pay for the service, or be served ads, or both. I do like some of my pictures in an on like photo album. Much easier to share pictures of a trip or adventure with friends and family.

It could also be that if forums like this have to spend more money for the servers to host all our pictures, that there will have to either be a charge to fund the expense, or limitations like there already is on the Stove Huggers forum (non forum hosted pictures only).

I'll make sure the photo size's are kept down to viewable sizes as to conserve their generosity.

Generally 1024 x 768 with JPEG medium compression is a good combination of quality and size.

I never deleted my photobucket account, but simply quit using it. I figured that if they didn't want to live up to our original bargain they could clean up the mess without my assistance. I rarely used the service except to park certain photo's there to be used for occasions where a third party host was required like in our stovehuggers forum. I never exceeded the allotted "free" space.

However, recently, out of curiosity, I attempted to log in to their site. Apparently, they have changed the "free" space rules and are requiring me to pony up some money. Not going to do it. All the pics I ever uploaded are still around on this computer or other (older) computers I still have. So...if there are any pictures I would want to view, I still have them.

Key to any of life's potential "UPSETS"...is to try and never allow anyone(or anything) to become so important that you can't live without them. This includes forums, people and things...although slavery was supposedly abolished...CHOOSING to become overly dependent on any given entity amounts to the same result. I do my best not to participate in any activity where the benefits do not equal or exceed my investment (in money or time).

John - one thing you might consider doing is having a second and third place to store photos. Thumb/flash drives have gotten so affordable and the capacity is pretty impressive. You can get a 32 gig drive for less than $10 - that will hold thousands of photos. Would be a shame to try and start one of those older computers and nothing would happen. Good luck.

I think that must be true for NEW accounts. I am WAY over the minimum (thousands and thousands of photos) but I have never paid a dime. I do have almost all those photos on my computer (and on the external drive which backs up automatically every night). Using Flickr now but still keep the original on my computer.
