  • Vacuum Gage

My 60 Hawk has the Vac. gage mounted between the Tach and Speedo, Thus moving the clock to the Passenger side. I am looking to see if anyone knows of a vendor who might carry the VAC gage or if someone has one sitting around. It is a cool setup that I want to see all working again. I rebuilt the Tach sending unit[B)] no fun!! got that going. All the gages are working but the Vac. and Oil pressure gage is reading a bit low but that one has had me stumped for a while.
If anyone can help let me know.
    Thanks[8D]

The vacuum gage was standard 0n 56-58 Golden Hawks and the hole stayed in the dash fiberglass and someone just cut the overlay to mount it. The correct size gage is sold by Summit Racing in bunch of styles or you can use the Golden Hawk gage.

'56 to '61 Hawk clocks are the size of the speedo or tach. The clock is mounted to the right of the radio, if there is a tach. The vacuum or vacuum/pressure gauge is the size of the small gauges. If your clock is the size of the vacuum gauge, maybe it's from an Avanti.

Several years ago I put a vacuum gauge in my Hawk. I got a standard Stewart Warner gauge the same outfit that made the original Hawk gauges. The only difference is there is a "SW" at the bottom on the gauge and when backlit, it has kind of a greenish tinge to the color rather than the natural colored light. You say the existing gauge is reading low....what do you consider low? If it's low at idle, like less than 15 inches, you might make sure the ignition timing is ok. I adjusted my timing and it now idles at around 18-20 inches and will drop down to aroound 10 inches when accelerating moderatly. If it shows low and the needle moves sluggishly when reving the engine, you might check for a leak or kinked vacuum line.

Mike and John Kirchhoff; just a friendly reminder, you both need to READ his original post. It say's he has a stock looking '57-'58 Golden Hawk "type" dash! It's a '60 Hawk with the stock large clock as you mention by the glove box, and a stock size vacuum guage that has been added and does NOT work, where it should be: "between the Speedo and Tach. His OIL guage however reads low. The only difference between the Vacuum gauges JDP mentions fitting '56-'58 GH's is that the '57-'58 ones have PSI (boost) and the '56 does not.
Either would be fine in a '60. As hard to find and expensive as they are, I would take John K's advice to try to repair it and or John P(JDP)'s advice and buy a new SW or other brand guage.

OK, now that we are clear, Rodney you need to simply get a oil guage and connect it directly to the right rear of the head and test your oil pressure, it's pretty important to know if the GAUGE has a prob. or the ENGINE!! [V]

            John,

The way I read Rodney's post is that he thinks the oil pressure gauge is reading low and the vacuum gauge is non op.

That implies the clock would be between the tach and speedo except that he has the vacuum gauge there. Maybe that's not what he meant.
There is only room for a small gauge, between the tach and speedo. If his clock would fit there, maybe it's from an Avanti.

Mike: Oh well; I give up, maybe when you get a Hawk you'll understand. The Clock never was in the center, it was where the Tach. is, now it is in the clock hole by glove box. Like I said, it looks like a full dash Golden Hawk, it really is not modified. I've never seen this '60 Hawk, I am just going by his one post, quite clear to me.

Studerich, I did read the post and I know exactly how his dash is laid out because my dash looks exactly like his does. I cut a hole in the dash of my '60 Hawk for the addition of a 2 1/8" SW vacuum gauge as well as cutting an additional hole by the glove box for the installation of an orginal Hawk clock. So yes, it does look like that of a '56 Golden Hawk. I believe you are right that he meant his oil pressure guage was reading low and not both as I first thought. I write regular articles for a national trade magazine as well as monthly newsletters for my ag clients and I guess I sometimes fail to "read it like they write it". Personally I'm appalled at the terrible English used on so many eBay ads. I'd be embarrassed to "rite that stuff"!

Frist of all Let me clear it up, Vac gage not working, Thanks for the tips on finding another. Oil Pressure gage is reading low but 15-20 at Idle I am told is good. BuT am still going to check it at the head as StudeRich suggested.

I always enjoy reading and using this forum as a sounding board. There are a lots of helpful "folks" here.

Thank you all for your help and I will try and "rite stuff" better for those that require it
