Both sides of this unfortunate ongoing controversy have now had an opportunity to present their arguements. I have now locked this thread and fully expect all parties to not restart it with a different thread and the same arguments. Avail yourselves of private emails if you wish to continue discussions. Continued public argument on either side of this solves nothing. Attempts to reignite this will be deleted. Thank you.

I stayed off this publicly on the SDC forum and asked people to e-mail me, but DL is responding here with a line of pure unadulterated BS...(In particular as it relates to our particular dealings).

We arranged a 'trade' of my materials for two pair of 'famous[:0]' ported cylinder heads, a trans adapter kit, and a pair of caliper mount brackets (GM to Ford 9").
I supplied him with a used, but fully race prepped and freshened, reverse shift pattern, Hipster internal line loc, aluminum shielded T400 racing transmission (that was shop shelf clean and had a blue plastic input shaft plug in the front and a 'new' yoke in the back (that was wired in place). A brand new B&M hole shot high stall converter, a new B&M GM flywheel, and new B&M ratchet shifter (and cable)....along with four Stude head cores. (He wanted the trans and parts for his Avanti drag car project).
I personally delivered everything but two of the head cores to his house. We stood there at his house, standing face to face, and shook hands on our 'deal'. Not a customer? Wanna bet? Go ahead and 'press me'... I'm ready any ol' time.....
Oh, and those two head cores were dropped off a month later by my father in law on his return to Chicago from visiting me in Florida.
At the time I delivered my parts to DL I received NOTHING from DL, as he had not made anything at that time. I eventually did receive from him, months later, the caliper mounts, and the trans adapter kit.
After many months (years actually) of requests about the status of the heads I got no decent reply with a timeframe for completion. Just excuses.
When another person on a different forum complained about the lack of service from DL, I added my experience to the discussion.
Soon after that DL said he would not have time to do any heads for me, as he had promised.
So... I drove to his house in Illinois (from Florida) and knocked on his door.
We had to go over to his other house to go through the stuff in his storage garage to find the head cores, and then return to his house to go into his garage, move a bunch of stuff to dig out the transmission (which was under a bunch of other oily stuff)and get my other parts out.
Now, since I had used the caliper mounts and the trans adapter (which needed 'finessing' to get it to fit properly) we agree'd that DL would keep the B&M shifter and cable. We both stood there and agree'd we were'even', and we were 'done'.
    I left with my stuff.
    In conclusion....
I pre-paid my deal, and had to go re-po my stuff when I was not 'paid off' on our trade agreement. After several years....
So his excuse of my not being a customer because I had not paid... Is total BS. His excuse of devaluing my trade material because it was oily...is also BS. (There was so much crap in and around his shop, and the grime on the floor was bad enough to trash the carpeting in my pickup truck...but I'll leave that part alone....)
So if anyone is going to accuse me of being a rock thrower with DL....
    You betcha.
As long as I waited for broken promises?
    Yep.
I'm a pretty good aim, too.
And I don't throw unless provoked, or wronged.
DL should know that the very people he says left the other forums have not gone away. They are still here.
They just have new fake names now
I hide in plain site and wear my scars proudly.
I won't ever get screwed by DL again, as I will never do business with him ever again.
Once is enough, and I was lucky because I got my stuff back.
A long, terse, DL reply with excuses for non performance doesn't plus me one bit.
My experience stands on it's own.
It's [u]just</u> the [u]truth</u>, and it doesn't take a MENSA club member to figure that out...or who was contacting DL to fill him in on this forum topic.....
OK, I'm done now, for all the good that will do....
(Go ahead Bob, time to moderate)

    Hello,

I have received an e-mail notification from a friend that I am being talked about and need to reply or explain.

First the rear disc brakes; Out of thousands of these over the decades, we get very few with troubles. Usually the troubles are about doing the e-brake adjustments properly.

I receieved your return package in good shape. I have sent those CarQuest rotors back to CarQuest to have them examined for the out of round or oval holes as you have explained in your e-mail. I cannot find, and they cannot find, any out-of-round or oval holes anywhere. They will not give credit on the rotors since they say the rotors have been turned down smaller.
I have taken the rotors to a couple different shops in an effort to find the oval hole situation you described. NONE have found any holes out of dimension, but one shop put a rotor on his machine and wondered why your friend machined it thinner with a .011 wobble.

Since I have NEVER received any CarQuest, AutoZone or other rotor with out-of-round holes before, since I could not find a shop around here who could find out-of-round holes on either rotor, and since Carquest will not allow me credit on rotors that have been macined thinner for whatever reason, I can't offer a refund on the rotors.
We have since installed your returned brackets, e-brakes, and calipers (with fresh CarQuest rotors) on a friend's car, and he is really tickled with them. I can send out a refund check for the rest of the brake set that was returned. I just can't refund the modified rotor part of it. If that is agreeable with you, I can send the refund right away. If you want me to keep checking with different machine shops about the "buggered up" rotors, I can check with a few other shops to see if they can find anything, but I do believe it would be fruitless.
I really don't think there is any chance I can get any credit on the rotors, and believe it is best to stop trying to find the oval hole problem that no one can find.

Did you have your rear axle hubs trued before doing machining on the rotor? Did you determine that the hubs ran true AFTER being remounted on the axles? A very common problem on tapered axles is the error involved in getting one part machined without checking for the whole assembly for being true. Did you remove the old studs before "truing" the rear hubs or did someone try to skip those steps? Did you check the new studs to make sure the knurled shoulders weren't sticking out too far and preventing rotors from sitting flat? Were the stud holes in the axle flange properly chamfered to prevent the new studs from raising up a small area of metal on the axle flange around the stud? That could keep a rotor from sitting flat. Always chamfer the hole after a stud is remove or replaced. Was that done or was that skipped?

I am sorry, but as I said, I can refund the rest of the parts, but the modified rotors could not be credited. Will you accept a refund that does not include the "buggered up" rotors?

Please send me an e-mail directly instead of replying on this bulletin board. One of the many reasons I do not read or post on these boards is that you have someone in your group, maybe more than one, that loves to forge headers and post gibberish and nonsense under other people's names when he gets provoked.
    *************************

I do not plan to post here again execpt under an extraordinary circumstance. If you see another post that seems to come from this name, eye it with suspicion as another fake with a forged header.
    ************************
I wish to stay out of the internal politics and group squabbles that drove many away from the alt studebaker site and drove many out of the club. I do not expect to get my loaner tools back that I loaned to the group tool-exchange program nor do I ever expect to find out who had them last. I don't care. I just want to stay away from the group squabbles that seem to erupt quite regularly.

I see that a few rock throwers felt the need to include their comments.

I just got off the phone (for the 3rd or 4th time) with Jim Turner, he is being VERY helpful in figuring out how to convert my 51 Champion to disc brakes. I'm giving him my order today and I'm glad to spend money with someone so responsive.

I too have a story on an engine to transmission adapter that I could not use because it was warped from welding and he would not make good on it.

Tom, come on now-- what is to work out? Ed should have had his refund of around 300.00+ back in October. Not a bunch of lame excuses that he has recieved.
Work it out?? just send the man his money + shipping the parts, that's how you work it out.
Work it out --- you say that as if Ed has some fault in this, the only fault he has is in buying the brake kit in the first place.

I am not sure what happened on individual cases but I have dealt with Dave ever since I bought my first Studebaker in '93. I have found his designs and workmanship to be top notch with two sets of ported R series heads and two rear and one front disk brake setups two GM auto trans to Studebaker engine adapters, and one HEI distributor for a Studebaker. Yes he can be a little slow but I usually found it was because he over commits himself most of the time. When I have had any questions he typically answers them quickly and completely with more detail than I need. It is too bad that he is his own worst enemy sometimes since his products have generally gotten good comments. Yes he does have some negatives and neutrals on ebay but he still has a 98.6%+ out of 2741 transactions. I am not defending him if he has stiffed someone, but just saying that I have never fount he was dishonest in any dealings I have had with him.

Well, it has now been almost 6 months and Ed still has no refund
from Dave Levesque (Steel Tech) for the returned rear disc brake set up that he received back (october 2006).
Maybe I should go into business making stuff that doesn't work
as advertised, sell it, get it back on customers dime, never issue
a refund, and sell it to the next one ----
