  • Transmission / Overdrive: What transmission do I have?

Working on my 1956 3/4 tn pickup with a v8 and trying to figure out my transmission. The build sheets says it came with a 3 speed and everything I've found online and in the manual says Studebaker used Borg Warner transmissions. However, mine is a New Process and the only ID I find on it is located in the top right corner C-92802.
Any help here would be apprecited!

Studebaker Trucks had Borg Warner, New Process and Clark Transmissions depending on the Model and year, the later than '56 Truck Parts Catalog shows all of these and their Parts.

There was a Guy who ordered a 1956 Transtar and gave the factory all of the current parts numbers of required Studebaker Parts and the New Process 5 Speed Direct and Overdrive Trans. info to build him a 5 Speed Overdrive Truck and they built it for him.

In later years they made that setup and the Direct 5 version available to the public, I believe the first ones were 1959 4E's, you either have HIS Truck or a clone.

...someone swapped in the different tranny......they may or may not have dialed in the B-hsg. Can you confirm the engine is that on the build sheet ??

I know the block was replaced at some point because there is no serial number and it's painted red, instead of turquoise. Nothing looks modified about the engine, so I feel like everything else is original, but at some point the transmission was replaced.

In that case there is a very good chance that your Replacement Block is a Late '62-'64 Type with the provision for a Full flow Oil Filter Adapter and spin-on Filter at the right rear of the Block. If there is not a Filter there, there may be a Block-off Plate that you can remove with 2 Bolts.

Many replacement Engines were done that way even at Dealers, sometimes keeping the Partial flow Filter on the Top front of the Engine when a MAJOR improvement could have been done very simply, but instead it was put back more like "Original".
