  • Cool/Heat: heater motor

I need to either rewire or replace my heater motor on a 51 champ. Any ideas or recomendations.

    More information, please.

Are you converting the car to 12 volts? Is the motor burned out?

The 12 volt motors have a larger shaft diameter and so the hole in the fan must be machined. I tried to do it with a hand drill and made a mess out of mine.

You may be able to use the 6 volt motor on 12 volts with a very high wattage dropping resistor. The polarity makes no difference. It will still rotate the correct direction.

I rewired the car with modern plastic wire since its a driver.still 6volt and verydependable.the heater motor is still cloth but the cloth is history. I want it rewired in plastic don't want any short outs. The motor runs good.just needs new leads.

You might see if there are any appliance repairmen left in your town. Or possibly a hobby shop that repairs toy train transformers or a radio repair shop. any of them can remove half of the motor case and solder new vinyl covered wires to the motor.

Failing that, you can slide some heat shrink tubing down the length of the wires and poke them into the motor housing. Or even better, remove the motor housing yourself and slide the heat shrink all the way to where the wires are soldered to the motor.

If you have the skills to rewire a car, you can fix the wires on the motor.
