Power steering filter

I just had the fluid changed in the power steering system in my '55 President and there was no filter. Should I be using one?

Your '55 would have the Saginaw setup. So far as I know there is no "filter". There may be a screen someplace. The '55 setup return hose goes back into the pump body and I am not sure what happens from there. I have a '57 pump on my '53 and those have the return hose going to the reservoir/tank. There is a double layer fine screen inside. I actually had to pull this apart to clean out once when red silicone sealant I used on the cork gaskets under the tank had bits get into the system and clogged up that screen.

Ref. post #14, what year and model Ford pump was used? I would like to put a filter on my '61 Hawk ('62 pump).= Jim

I bought a steering pump set-up from a 390 T-Bird early to mid 60's and it had the same pump and reservoir, I wanted the dipstick lid. Just look for a '65ish or earlier Eaton Ford pump. The shelf for the filter is held on by the bolt that holds the housing to the pump.

National Parts Depot sells parts for Mustangs. The pump filter is their part number 33538-1. The retail is $15.70.
