  • Interior: 63 Avanti power window problem

The passenger side window has quit working. Fortunately it failed in the up position. The motor whirs but the window does not move so I am assuming there is some coupling that has failed. Any insight to offer before I open it up?

There is a plastic coupler connecting the motor armature to the gear housing stem. This may be your issue, however, there is also the gear housing which contains a large nylon drive gear. The gear stem is steel and can easily strip the nylon if something stops the window from sliding, etc. That would cause the motor to work and the window to not.... So the best outcome would be had by disassembling the entire window mechanism and renovating the guides as well as the drive mechanism. They are fairly easy to work on and fortunately your motor appears to be ok...

When you get your door panel open, be sure to check the integrity of the fiberglass mounting of all parts and pieces. If there is breakage, though, don't fret. A piece of sheetmetal riveted in place will cure the problem area. Redrill and you're off to the races.
