  • Engine: 1940 Commander freeze plugs

Can someone help me find out the total number and locations of the freeze plugs on a 1940 commander straight 6? Thanks

    Welcome to the forum Mike.
According to Studebaker International Catalog you'll need:
    127366 1-3/16" disc. 1934-42 all
    models except Champion & 1947-
    50 Commander. Truck: M16, 17 &
    2R-5E 3, 6, 11, 14, 16, 17. Takes 1.

    1539038 1-1/2"
    disc. 1939-60 Champion.
    Takes 1. 1934-60 Commander
    6-cyl. Takes 6. 1951-early 62
    V-8. Takes 6. Truck: M5 10,
    15 & 2R-6E 2, 7, 12, 13, 28, 38, 40. Also used
    on camshaft rear bearing hole.

As for the location of the different plugs, they'll be obvious once the engine block has been stripped from its accessories.
    I hope this helps.

Studebaker blocks are notorious for having casting debris in the water jacket (sand, wire, etc). If you have the core plugs out spend some quality time rooting out as much as you can.

You will find ALL of the Core Plugs on the driver's side of the Block.

There isn't any at the back of the block? Behind the flywheel?

Incase anyone else needs the answer to this question, there are 5 freeze plugs on the drivers side, one on the upper back part of the block towards firewall, and one behind the bell housing plate. Total of 7.
