  • Body / Glass: 1947 Champion Hood Rod - early model

How is the hood prop rod held in front of the radiator? There is on clip or anything on mine to hold it.

    Thanks
    Neil

Mine is held on by a spring, washer and cotter key.

Mine too at the pivot. When you swing it down to the driver's side to lower the hood, that secures it there? My father's 48 pivoted to the back and was secured it a saddle on the right front fender, I have no saddle on my car for it to sit in on the left side of the radiator.
      Thanks

I just looked in the parts manual again and it looks like the air deflector has some sort of a saddle on it - Item 0502-84. My father's 48 was a late one, assembled in Hamilton in August or so 1948 when they opened and it seems like the change came in 1948 and not 47 as I had thought. Would some one have a picture of the saddle as I have nothing there at all.
        Thanks

Thanks Milt. I think I may try a small magnet at see if that does the trick. Will I be seeing you in St Louis?

Some of the SDC vendors sell part #277999, a hood prop rod clip for 1947-60 models. I don't know if it is the same as original or not.

Thanks Dwain. I am going to the Ontario Studefest on the weekend and I will look at some other cars. I see the number listed in the manual for the correct clip for the 47 and early 48. There is no picture of it though.

On my '47 Champion, G288050, the radiator core support wraps around in front of each side of the radiator tank .... these wrap-arounds are triangular and go between the air deflector and the radiator tank. The prop rod is fastened at the centre of the right triangle, and its retaining clip is bolted to the centre of the left triangle. These triangles are not shown in parts book drawing 0503-10. The air deflector also has 2 bolts going vertically into the triangles --- these bolts are not shown in drawing 0502-84. The triangles stand about 7 cm above the rim of the air deflector, and are about 9 cm wide along the edge of the deflector. (The parts book drawing of the radiator 0501-1 appears to show clips attached directly to the both sides of the front of the radiator tank.)

Thanks so much Bill. Makes perfect sense. I just put a hardware store J hook on the left ear in front of the radiator with a 1/4" bolt and I think it will work fine until the St Louis meet where Barry from Texas I supposed to be bringing up the right clip for me. I am also bringing down a spare glove box door for Richard to use for guidance on the sizing for the mini manual sheet he is working on.
Thanks again and have a good one!
