  • Wheels / Tires: chrome wheels - will they fit?

I WAS LOOKING AT THE LATEST EDITION OF TURNING WHEELS [ JULY 2015 ] WHEN THE J C TAYLOR ADVERTISEMENT ON PAGE 63 CAUGHT MY EYE. PICTURED 1964 STUDEBAKER CRUISER WITH CHROME WHEELS. QUESTION, ANYONE KNOW WHAT BRAND THE WHEEL WERE ? price ? AND WOULD THEY FIT MY 64 CRUISER WITH DISC BRAKES. THANKS IN ADVANCE. LEONARD

the wheels look like Halibrand mags to me, with spinners attached. both the wheel and spinner are available as new "runs" by some folks that i saw here on the forum a few days ago.

I don't think leonard is talking about the Halibrand Ad, he is talking about the J C Taylor Ad with the Cruiser that is sporting what appears to Cragar SS Mag Wheels.

^ that's possibly so. it seems the J.C. Taylor isn't a "real" picture and has some shading added to the wheels and other photoshopping.

idk, i was just trying to help. the Cragars (or similar) are probably less expensive...

That particular Cruiser used to be a local car - it is a '65 not a '64 although there are no clues showing that - and yes, those are indeed Cragar style wheels. Cragar wheels are unique in that the die cast aluminum center has 5 steel inserts cast in which are then welded to the steel rim. Sturdier construction that the average "mag" style wheel cast from aluminum.

Ok, I'm tired of being wrong. from now on, i suppose i should limit my posts to what i've done, not what i've read or thought i've seen on other threads, etc.

                  idk, having a bad day...

I checked out the cragar chrome wheels and found to my amazement that the cragar wheels will not be available for my 64 cruiser according to summit racing,i then checked out the chrome looking mag wheel hub caps and they to would not be aviable for my crusier. is the wheel on the 64 cruiser a special wheel?thanks in advance. leonard

You didn't say what size you were looking for, but I find a series 390 in 15x6" with 2 5/8" backspacing, and series 500C in 15 x 7" with 4" backspacing. Both with 5 x 4.5" BP. Both styles appear to be nearly identical to the wheel that's in the JC Taylor ad.

ET II mag wheels (from the late 60's) were produced in a similar production method and they actually worked pretty well. I had 15 x 7 units on my '63 GT Hawk and they worked fine.
