'63 Avanti T-86 transmission removal - any tips??

Thanks Gord/Rich .. I have a transmission scissor jack I bought from
Harbor Freight for when I swapped the 700R4 in my wifes IROC.



Good point about the speedo cable and backup light wiring. I guess
they would have let me know pretty quick if I didnt undo them![:I]
I was mostly concerned about clearing the x-member. Cool.

Well I am sure you would not forget, but as long as you are being that detailed... you do have to remove the speedometer cable and the backup light switch wires! Three speeds do have one like the 4 speeds do right?

'63 Avanti T-86 transmission removal - any tips??

OK, as soon as I get the Halloween stuff back into the attic, this is
coming out. Dan has the TKO input shaft extention on its way here, so
I want to get the T-86 out, and throwout bearing swapped.

This is what I figure needs to be done, but maybe a few of you might
have experience otherwise.

1. Raise the car up on a couple rims under the tires, or jack stands.
2. Drain the oil from the trans.
3. Remove the driveshaft.
4. Remove the shifter boot and linkage from the trans.
5. Unbolt the trans from the bellhousing.
6. Pull the trans out of the bellhousing & move back over the X-member
until the input shaft clears the bellhousing.
7. Drop the front of the trans down, and slide the tailshaft out from
over the X-member.
8. Transmission is out.

Did I miss anything??

That's how I got the T10 out of mine.
Use a floor jack or transmission jack to take the weight of the tranny. Even though they are not that heavy, they seem like it when held at arm's length while you are on your back. Lacking a jack, get the car high enough that you can lower the tranny onto your chest and press the new one up. Easier to handle in that position.
