  • Other: 1960 Lark VIII convertible top trouble

This is hard to explain but here goes. At the end of cruising season last summer the top would go down completely and then when I took my finger off the switch the top would creep back up about 2 inches. I like to use the boot but if I leave it the way it is I'm going to rip the boot.

Lets take a SWAG, you have air in the hydraulic system. Doofus

Are you unzipping the rear window before putting the top down? The plastic gets stiff in colder weather and needs to nest in the top well.

Other than that look for places where the top material may be binding in the frame. Also make sure there is nothing in the trunk that got under the top well.

Maybe I should have elaborated. Looks like something under back left door panel is pushing it up which in turn pushes C pillar up

As you know the top well should be empty prior to lowering it. When I lower mine the section of the top material between the header & the second bow I fold outwards (towards the rear of the car). The other thing may be as Doofus pointed out is air in the hydraulic system. Have you flushed the system & changed it to automatic transmission fluid? If so you could still have air there. The top pump/motor assembly is the same one used on modern cars. When I changed mine I flushed the system out & used trans fluid. No more messy brake fluid to tend with. Let us know what you find.

It'll be a while before I get to it. I was looking for an easy fix. What a dreamer. What profession would look at something like this. Glass shop, body shop etc

Take it to an auto upholstery shop.

An auto upholstery shop made it worse. They pop riveted the front of the top (bottom front) the first time I put the top down it ripped rite thru the rivets leaving it unfixable. They just thru their hands up and said they couldn't fix it. The only positive from this experience was they returned may money.

Sounds like a real backyard upholstery shop. I'd ask around for some recommendations the next time your at a local cruise. Look for a couple cars that have outstanding interiors & ask where they had it done. Getting it done right pays off.

First off it was not a backyard upholstery. shop. They are very well respected. I don't know why you would suggest an upholstery shop as they work with materials not diagnosing mechanical problems at least in ON Canada
                        have a good one Warren
