  • Mating the motor with the automatic trans

I was looking at the pic's of JDP's motor and trans and wanted to know When I put the automatic trans and 289 motor together what do I have to do to mate the two, right now the trans spline is lined up 9;00and 3;00. when I bolt it up what do I do, with the small block and turbo 350 I would spin the converter on the turbo 350, what would I do with the flight-o-matic? I want to put mine in as a unit.

When I re & re a Flightomatic, I separate the tranny from the bellhousing. Putting it back in, I check to see where the pump drive tangs are oriented on the converter, and then shift the gear in the front pump to match up. The tangs are smaller than the slots in the pump gear, so the match-up is not critical. I've never had any trouble reinstalling the Stude automatics.

Make sure you center the torque converter too. Leave the converter bolts loose, bolt in the transmission and rotate the engine two full revolutions and tighten the bolts through the side access in the bell housing.

This is what the J6310 tool is supposed to do, right?

Shouldn't this be a fairly easy tool to find, since it would have been common to all the Ford, Merc and AMC cars that used this trans as well?
