I am wanting to put a 289 with a bellhousing for a T98 into my 61 Champ pickup that has a 3 speed w/od. Is the pickup 3 speed a T85 or T86? And will it bolt up to the T98 bellhousing? Thanks. Bruce.

You didn't specify which engine was in your '61 Champ, but if it's a V8, it most likely has the T89 truck variant of the T85. This is identifiable because it has a side cover instead of the top cover the T90 variant of the T86 would have. JMHO, but the T85/T89 is the best all-around tranny for any Stude V8 car or truck.

And no, neither are a direct boltup to the T98 bell. The good news is truck 3-speed bellhousings are thick on the ground. Put out a WTB in your local SDC chapter to save shipping.

It is the 170 6 cyl. Can I use the bellhousing from the 170 if I dial it in with the 289?

No. The V-8 engine takes a different bell housing than the 6 cylinder engine.

Some 6's used a V8 bell housing with a support plate. Between 61 and 64 I have seen about half and half.
