  • Question on Avanti body tag

The Avanti body tags that I remember were a larger rectangular plate. This narrow tag is on a low number body, was this the normal body tag? When did they change?

sigpic 1963 Studebaker Avanti: LS1 motor and T-56 transmission have been moved rearward, set up as a two seat coupe with independent rear suspension. Complex solutions for nonexistant problems.

Maybe the original tag was replaced with that one for some unknown reason? [xx(]

It looks like it says '66RQ' or '68RQ'. Possible this was standard issue for an Avanti II?

Our '63 R-1 Avanti has the narrow tag. Tt reads RQ(space)2710. I asked around and never did get a satifactory answer.

Looks like it is on the drivers side. All EX-xxxx cars have the body plates and numbers on the frame on the drivers side, the S/N under the steering column. Look at your old frame and see what the numbers were. On my 63 R 2007 the body no. is 63RQ 1188 and it is a large plate.

What's an EX-xxxx Car? Is that Factory Experimental as in Engineering prototype? [][][]

I never saw one that was not on the RIGHT!

Rich, The Due Cento R-5 was EX-2942. The 229 car or the California Sunshine of Bill Burke's was EX-2143. Paxton put the numbers on a plate and pop rivited it to the drivers side frame rail directly opposite the R series type.

Does anyone know where I could get the proper letter/number dies for the Avanti body tag? Or if there is a professional service that can do this? A misguided previous owner replaced the body tag with one that had the same sequental number as the vin. Besides being the wrong body tag number, it was stamped conventionally rather than embossed.

N/A, SASCO, At one time had a stack of Avanti unassigned and blank body number tags. They may have the imbossing equipment. Carrol Studerbaker, deceased, had the Studebaker equipment that was used to stamp the serial numbers in the door piller plates of steel bodied cars.

So, Alan, you're saying that grobb284's Avanti body was originally a 'special' Paxton car?

Well, I'm halfway there: after buying my Avanti I had contacted the next previous owner and he sent me a few parts that he still had - he sent me two blank Avanti body tags as this was something he also wanted to fix.
