  • Fuel System: Fuel Pressure Regulator

I have been experiencing with my '50 Commander with the Big Six and Stromberg 1-bbl carb. After I have driven for a number of miles the engine begins to idle rough and hesitates or even backfires when accelerating from a stop. It sounds and feels like the carb is loading up like it is getting too much fuel. It has an electric fuel pump and I am wondering if the fuel pressure is too high. I don't think I can adjust the pump so would need to get a fuel pressure regulator.
Does anyone have any experience similar to this and has resolved the problem with a pressure regulator?

Hmmm...backfiring is usually a sign of a lean condition. Does the rough idle clear up in just a few moments of running? Do you have a fuel filter? Check that for clogging. The next time it happens, stop the engine, turn off the ignition, pull the air cleaner and see if when you open the accelerator, the accelerator pump puts a shot of gas into the carburetor. OR, with the engine running and still idling poorly, shoot a little starting fluid into the carburetor. If the idling gets worse, the problem is a rich mixture; if the idle smooths out, it is a lean mixture.

The engine smooths out quickly once I get going and runs well otherwise. The problem doesn't show up until I have driven some ways down the road. Once it smooths out I can accelerate without any coughing or hesitation so I think the acceleration pump is okay, but I will try what you have suggested the next time I take the car out.
I do have a fuel filter and I inspect it regularly. It is clear.
      Thanks for the suggestions.
