While having a few (not so smart) set-backs on starting my R1 Lark build, I finally have the rebuilt engine started after a few hours over a few days. My first problem was a bad battery. Then I thought my problem was my old carburetor not atomizing the fuel, so I rebuilt a 3506A carburetor. The engine still would not fire. Then I thought I might have the distributor 180 degrees out of phase. While confirming that was not the problem I noticed the distributor rotor turning counter-clockwise. What made me think the distributor turned clockwise it's beyond me. That was my dummy moment and quickly fixed the firing order. The engine fired up after that quickly but after running for 10 minutes I seem to have a problem getting fuel up to the filter bowl. When I first tried to start the engine a few days ago I noticed fuel gushing into the filter bowl. Then I could not get fuel up to the filter bowl. During my frustration stages of starting this engine I blew air through the fuel line back to the tank, thinking something is blocking the fuel line. I then tried to turn the engine over again and the pump would not prime, I actually had to suck fuel in to pump then it seemed to flow pretty good into the filter bowl from turning the engine over. Conclusion - The rebuilt R1 fuel pump seems to work well. (Days ago)
Where it stands right now after running the engine for about 10 minutes is that the fuel filter bowl sucks almost dry. I am thinking a possible tear in the pump diaphram, air leaking into the pump from the hose connecting to the pump or a loose fitting.
I really don't want to pull the fuel pump yet,......
Anyone have this happen? What was your problem?
