  • Engine: Flexible oil pressure hose

Does the flexible oil pressure hose (on my 1963 Lark 259 installed in a 1959 Silver Hawk) screw into the engine with pipe threads or straight threads?

The engine side is a 1/8" pipe thread, the gauge side is an AN-2 fitting, and they are NOT common. I had new black braided stainless oil lines made up, last time (other than self inflicted wounds) you'll need to replace it.

The reason I ask is that I bought a black braided stainless steel flex hose from Studebaker Parts and it had straight thread on each end so it would not thread into my engine block. I used an adapter and a 1/8 pipe thread nipple to install it. When I asked Chuck about it, he replied (by email): "The oil line is not supposed to have a pipe thread, I checked with old stock lines I have that are too old to use for comparison." OBTW, I have lots of AN fittings left over from my racing days.

Other Studebaker Vendors have the correct exact copy of the neoprene Hose, ribbed surface, correct fittings and all.

          Thanks,

Well, I just tried one on the 289 block I have sitting in my garage, and it fits without any issues! The engine side is pipe thread, and the gauge side is an AN 2. I have both the V-8 hose and the 6 cylinder hose. I'm not sure what the issue is. They do fit and they are the correct fittings.

I can tell you unequivocally that the one I bought did not have pipe thread on the engine side. The end fitting had no taper to it so it would not fit into the engine block.

If it is one of mine, send it back to me, and I will replace it.

It is installed by using a coupling and a pipe nipple. No sense in removing it now.

That is exactly how all mine are installed. When swapping a new line in, I simply re-use the coupling. If installing a line for the first time (I've never done that), a person would need to first find a coupling.

What Jim has said in this thread.

There has to be a failure to communicate somewhere, here. The engine-to-firewall Studebaker oil pressure gauge hoses Jim Turner has had made up are a perfect, drop-in replacement for the OEM lines, and will last literally forever.

If the one you have, Ginetta, really did come from Jim Turner, please remove it and return it to him.

I have no financial dog in this fight, but did help Jim find the custom hose builder who is making these right here in central Indiana , not in Taiwan or China or Timbuctu. This business makes really high-dollar hydraulic lines for top-notch Indy and NASCAR teams, and would want to see anything that left their shop that was in any way defective or out of spec.

                      Thanks. BP
