  • Wheels / Tires: Whitewall width

What is the correct whitewall width for a 57 Commander?

  • #2
    Approximately 2.25."

Up to 2.50" would be OK; anything above that starts to look like earlier than 1957. BP
We've got to quit saying, "How stupid can you be?" Too many people are taking it as a challenge.

    Ayn Rand:
"You can avoid reality, but you cannot avoid the consequences of avoiding reality."

    G. K. Chesterton: This triangle of truisms, of father, mother, and child, cannot be destroyed; it can only destroy those civilizations which disregard it.

Would that be the same for a 54 Commander? Also, what size radial tires/wheels would give it the most original look? Any recommendations? Thank you!

Stock Steel Late 1970's Ford or Chrysler (5 on 4.5) X15 X 5, or 5 1/2 and up to 6 Inches Wide will except radials and properly fit the P205X75 R15, P215X70 R15 or P215X75R15 Radial Tires you need, plus fit the Stock Wheelcovers, since you want it to look 1954 correct.

Unfortunately, Standard Radial Tires are not available in Wide Whites, so you have to spend 3 Times as much or more for "Classic Wide White Walls".

Is your " '54 Commander" a; Coupe, Hardtop, Sedan or Wagon?

Wayne Carini's Show Winning, Original '54 Starliner has Radial Tires that are very close to as wide white as originals were, but I don't like the look when they start to roll onto the Shoulder of the tire.

The short answer is no, 1954 whitewalls were wider than 1957.
IMO, no radials will give it an original look.

I always remember the front one placed behind the front wheel, not in front of it.
