  • OIL BATH air cleaner question

Okay, here's the deal. After I bought my 62 Daytona I found out that the air cleaner in the trunk was actually for a one barrel and not a two barrel carburetor. I searched all over the place and my brother finally remembered that he had an oil bath filter housing off an engine he got a few years ago. It had had water in it at some time and was rather rusty, but after soaking all the pieces in the electrostatic tank I put together it came clean and painted up beautifully.
I got a decal to put the final dressing on the filter housing, but I'm not sure where it goes. Also which way should that short snorkel be facing when the air cleaner is installed on the engine?

I checked the archives before I posted, but the filter in the post you refered to is the dry type. My filter is larger and shaped differently so I was not sure how it was supposed to sit on the engine. For instance, which way does the indentation in the lid face?

There is no identification in the lid on a United Specialties Studebaker air cleaner, could be the wrong air cleaner, or someone put the decal (available new at Stude. vendors) on the wrong part, it goes on the body not the lid.

Scan to 3/4 of the way down on this string (link below) to see a correct air cleaner with the decal and snorkel mislocated a bit.

I will leave this post a little longer, but so far everyone keeps refering me to pictures of dry element air cleaners. My filter is the oil bath type which is also stock for this car. I know it doesn't really matter in the long run because I intend to swap on a four barrel later, but since I have spent so much time restoring this housing I would prefer to finish it correctly. All the pictures of the oil bath type I have seen in other places don't have the detail I need.
Maybe someone will have an example I can look at in Branson this weekend.

Can you post of picture of your air cleaner housing?

According to Rich, late oil bath cleaners look VERY much like late paper element cleaners--right down to the snorkel. I can't remember seeing one of these in service but I am sure he's right.

From Gordy911's post asking the same thing:

All Studebakers with a cool air intake opening or pipe, point to the cool air, right front fender, 90 degrees from straight ahead, (or 9:00)!

In most, if not all cases that will put the DECAL where it belongs, straight ahead, front and center!

Allan, the oil bath housing is much bigger than the dry type and the snorkel is very short. It is really an oil bath filter much like older cars with a housing built around it probably for silencing the intake sound. I don't have any pictures at this time, but I wish I had before and after shots. I made an electrostatic set-up like I read about in some magazines and it worked beautifully for getting the rust out of the hard to reach spots and as a bonus the old paint lifted leaving me with a clean surface to paint.

52; that must be the type with the tall top cover 3-4 inches, the "flat" goes in the rear, to clear the hood rods, and the bottom gets the tightening screw on the right to the fender, I think that should put the intake also to the right fender. Because of the dents in the bottom to clear the linkage lever, it only fits one way!

Okay, that makes sense. I had not thought about the hood rods and I couldn't imagine what the indentation on the lid was for. Of course, I was always looking at it with the hood up and I never completely closed the hood while I was trial fitting the whole filter. The hole in the lid is ofset so if the indentation is to the rear it will orient everything else.

Okay, I think I know why my links to the pictures kept failing to work. Take a look at these if you're are following this post and still don.t know what we've been discussing.

I bought a NOS oil bath air cleaner from Newman & Altman years ago for the '55 E7 pickup w/ 4bbl and the decal was indeed on the TOP of the housing. It was still in the original box and obviously brand new.

Every picture I see of these air cleaners on RESTORED '55 cars and trucks with the 4 bbl oil bath cleaner have the decal on the side, not the top.

We just finished the restoration of the truck in the past week and I went ahead and put the decal on TOP where it was on the NOS unit.

                        Was I wrong?

The decal goes on the opposite side of the cleaner from the air intake. on the lower unit. The air cleaner sits on the engine with the air intake pointing to the passenger side of the car and the decal would be readable from the drivers side. I believe the type of decal depends on the year of the application. Mine is a United Oil Bath on a 4 bbl 61 Hawk. I thought I had a picture of it before it was restored but I couldn't find one.
