  • Electrical: Identifying Alternator

    I currently have a one-wire GM alternator setup on my 1950 2R Truck. I would like to use this
    Japanese unit in its place since it fits much better. However, I'm not sure exactly what it is,
    since I acquired it quite awhile ago, when I used to own a 58 Hawk. Not sure if it's a three wire,
    one wire, internal voltage regulator, or what. Can anyone help me identify the type of alternator it is? An internet search was of no help.

    The GM unit has two plug connector on the back, marked "R" and "F", (or "1 and "2") which is not being used), while the Japanese unit has a three-plug connection on the back, marked "F", "E" and "N".

    It looks to me like a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla that looks and fits quite well to replace the '63-'66 Stude. 35 Amp. Prestolite Alternator. You could ask an Electric Shop what that part number is, to get more info; Amps output etc.

    Although a Lucas design Mfg. by a aftermarket non-Lucas Co.
    Sounds very English to me, but could still fit *** cars or ??

      Rich, my main concern of course is whether this Alternator will operate as a one-wire. No one yet has been able to tell me whether this alt has a internal regulator. I was hoping someone could tell based on the connections on the back
      Maybe not. ....

        You do not want a "Mickey Mouse" one wire anyway, it will be difficult to wire it through the Ammeter like it was and should be, but easy to wire it the wrong way and make it charge.
        Remember no Factory setup EVER had a 1 wire!
        And this is NOT a GM Delco 1 wire.

        This looks to be a factory at least 3 wire type setup and that Can on the back COULD be the internal regulator, but as I said you have a Part Number why not ask the Brand X pros at your local Electrical Shop exactly what it is, we mostly know Studebaker parts not Toyota, Honda.

          A Lucas A8084 is listed for a Honda; I don't know what year. It is listed as a 50 amp alternator. I would check with a Honda dealers service or parts dept to see if they would know if it needs a regulator or how it is connected.

            I note that the terminals are almost marked the same except the "P" is marked "N" on yours.
