  • Manual transmission conversions

It's me, the novice again. Another question I have is regarding adapting my Studie engine to a later overdrive manual trans. I know I said I want to keep it Studie, but I'm afraid this is one area where I have to make an exception. I have a Cobra 5 speed and a Corvette 6 speed at my disposal. Does anyone make an adapter for either of these to fit the Studie bellhousing? It needs to replace a 3 speed O/D behind a 289 in a 53 Starliner. Thanx, db

Why not fix the OD? The electrics probably look tro complicated to you but ther is another way to wire it that makes it alot simpler and all you need is a switch to engage the OD solenoid.

If you car is ugly then it better be fast.....

It also has a bad second gear synchro at least, so it would need a complete rebuild. Besides, I kinda like to shift a little more than twice. Plus there are some better ratios available with a 5 or 6 speed. And my car is ugly.....

Here's a few recent threads on that subject....

There is a great "search" feature in the upper right hand corner of each forum page that has been a big help to me.

Just to comment on the three speed, Bob Andrews (bams50) had a similar problem, and the trans was rebuilt at the Studebaker National Meet in South Bend with the help of other members. He made a 'transmission seminar' video that he's making copies of.

If you plan on changing the trans regardless, the 5-speed has appeared to be the easier swap. There is even an article in the tech section when you click on the 'home' button at the top of the page. It isn't a bolt in, but it's been made to work.

Back to the three speed for a minute. If you make the switch, please make the old transmission available to the members here. One mans junk can be another mans treasure. Good luck with your project.
