  • overdrive solenoid

I'm working on a 1950 2R5 pick up. The overdrive solenoid has 3 terminals marked #8, #4, #6.I know which wire goes on #4 & #6, but what hooks to #8. The shop manuel only shows 2 wires.

My shop manual shows No. 4 being powered from the relay on the firewall and No. 6 connected to one of the rear terminals on the kick down switch. If memory serves, (and I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong) the No. 8 terminal is for wire from the governor. I know, the wire from the governor goes somewhere else on the wiring diagram.

As far as I know, 3-terminal solenoids are used in 12 volt systems, where they dispensed with the relay.

gord's right on this. The 3-terminal solenoids are 12 volt units - used on Studes from '58 thru '63.

You have the #4 and #6 wires correct. The governor wire goes to the front terminal of the kick down switch. So what hooks to #8?

Upon checking my 1960 shop manuel, I find that it is a 12 volt solonoid. Somehow it got put in this 1950 2R5. Thank you for your help. I will change that solonoid to a 2 terminal.

Shows what I know. I've got one of each and didn't check.

By following your thread I have some questions. My 58 Champion, which has the 185 and 3sp OD, will not shift into OD. I have the BW OD manual, but before I followed their procedure I was going to change the fuse in the relay. It is not located on the firewall as my 59 4E11 is located. Where is the relay if it has one? Also if you no longer need the 12V solenoid would you sell it?
                  Thanks in advance, Bill Elbert

The 12 volt solenoid is wired direct, no relay. The hot wire should originate at the starter solenoid, and may be fused at the kick down switch.
