i was wondering how hard it would be to change my 48 champion from a reg 3 speed trans to an over drive trans and do i need to do anything with the driveshaft

Should be very easy to do, provided you have all the parts. Since the overdrive transmission is some 6" longer, you need a shorter front driveshaft. You can have yours shortened, but if the new transmission proves to be bad, then you are stuck.
This sort of swap is best done if you have a complete car to rob the parts from, or get the whole assembly shipped to you from somebody who knows exactly what you need.
Rounding up all the small parts piecemeal can be quite a chore.

I did it recently on my '51. I obtained the OD trans and drive shaft together, everything else was available through Stude vendors.
