Replacement of timing cover seal

The Studebaker shop manual says that when replacing the timing cover seal on a v8 engine to not remove the four self taping screws on the retainer plate. Use an ice pick to remove the old seal and then carefully install a new seal in the recess. Someone told me to remove the screws because it is almost impossible to install a new one without removing the retainer plate. Also, drill two small holes on either side of the bottom screw so that any oil that got into the retainer could drain back out into the oil pan. Before installing the retainer run a bead of silicone on the felt seal. Should I do it this way or the way the manual says?

Drilling the holes to allow oil drain back, has been used successfully by quite a few people. I just built an engine and used
that method.

Remember to drill the drainback hole at about 4 to 5 o'clock, so the felt won't run dry.
