  • Brakes: Hill Holder won't let go

    Hi,

For some silly reason the brakes on my 1950 Commander won't release.

My guess is the hill holder isn't letting go when I release the clutch.

What ever the case it won't go either forward or reverse.

I can only guess someone else has had this particular learning experience and wonder what the solution might be.

    Thanks and bye for now,

    (1) Do you have plenty of "Free Travel" on your Brake Pedal?

    (2) Stop Lights stuck ON?

    (3) Was everything working good before this happened, or only after "work" was done?

    (4) A swelling Brake Flex Hose can also cause brake lockup.

    (5) One check you could make is, jack the Car up to determine if it is all 4, 1, 2 or 3 wheels locked.

    (6) Also follow the brake line OUT of the Hill Holder and note if it goes to the splitter brass block on the Left Front frame rail or just back to the rear brakes, that will tell you if it is possible to lock 2 or 4 wheels from a stuck H/H on YOUR particular Car. After 63 years, anything is possible.

      WELCOME ...to the SDC Forum!!!

Was there some event or events that occurred just prior to the HH not releasing? Changed brake shoes, replaced clutch, etc., etc???

This is a symptom of mis-adjustment in the actuator arm on the hill holder. Loosen one of the nuts and turn the other one toward the one you loosened. If this doesn't help, go the other way. Just a suggestion.
