  • Speedo / Tach / Gauges: Speedometer Drive

I have finally got my truck clutch linkage fixed, loose hole welded up and re drilled, new pins etc. I now have a great clutch and good free play. The gearbox (not the original) shifts fine now but the speedometer doesn't work - it does if I spin the cable with a drill. I removed the pinion shortly after I got the truck and saw it was munched. I put in another and it worked for a while albeit at an incorrect speed. Then that one got munched too. It seems to me that the pinion and the gear need to be a matched pair and that the whole set up needs to account for tire size and rear axle ratio. How can I tell what gear I have inside the gearbox? The gearbox is a T 86E 1A 3 speed overdrive. Thanks!

Make sure the pinion is for manual transmissions. They are reversed to the ones auto trans use. I'm not sure that applies to truck transmissions, though.
