  • Body / Glass: 58 PH hood holes

What function do the holes in the rear edge of the fiberglass hood serve? production holes?

Are there rivets in the holes? Perhaps epoxy was injected to help bond the skin to the inner structure? There is a copper screen bonded to the underside and ground wires to prevent radio interference. Perhaps it's part of that process.

I once owned a all original PH (58LS1488) & it never had holes in the hood as yours.Might I guess some PO drilled them for some unknown reason.

No rivets that we see. The holes didn't show up until we stripped the hood (with razor blades).
I guess it is possible that a pryer owner drilled them out but they were filled in with body filler. We will glass them in before painting, just curious as to their purpose.

          Hi Kerry,

There are two copper bonding straps that connect the hood to the firewall. Do you have them? Can't pull up the photobucket pics. Anyone know what's going on with Photobucket? When I clicked the choice to use the old version of Photobucket I didn't get any response.

Does anyone know how to turn off the hot links that are automatically created by typing certain words or phrases? Those things are pretty annoying.

Mike, the bonding strips are missing on this one. Where do they attach?

They attach with a couple of screws at each rear corner and to the firewall. Can't remember if they were 3/16 or 1/4 inch or whether I used a 3/8 socket or a 7/16 socket. Can't go out and look - I keep the body in my friend's shed and have the chassis, engine and running gear here at home.

I'll see if I can find a picture of one with the cables connected and attach it here.

                OK,

I was wrong. Now I remember; the strap is bonded from the back rib of the hood to a lower screw that secures the hood hinge to the body at either side of the engine compartment. If I did this photo right, it should display.

Mike, I remembered that you had posted a link to a webpage of this car that was made some years ago. It had all kinds of do-dads on it. Look at the page and at the back of the hood!

                    Oh yeah,

I'd forgotten about that. Mystery solved.

Kerry, now I know why the spare and spinner that you have on the deck lid was different. Thank goodness that owner had the continental kit removed, everyone thinks these were ugly enough from the factory

I worked PT in a shop that redid a Packard Hawk in that color. It won an SDC First before the color change and an SDC Senior First after the color change. I believe that was in the 1970s. The really strange part is that it was the light color like your small picture/avatar and the nice, dark color, like your bigger/signature picture, after its color change.

What are the odds??? I wanted one of these since I first rode in one at a meet in 1975 (I was 15) but not a Beige one. After seeing pics Joe Parson's 58 Golden I knew this color combo would really set the car off. Last year I had seen a freshly painted Jewel Beige 58 Golden, and it looked good, however it wasn't being parked in my garage. Neither would a freshley painted Jewl Beige Packard Hawk.
