  • Installing Anchor Points on a Lark VI

    Hi,
    I'm a new Studebaker owner and am wondering about installing new anchor points for two front seatbelts.
    I have no idea what to do, or who does this type of thing and would appreciate any help.
    From what I gather I need to have anchor points welded to the frame, which is underneath the floorboards.

    Any further help is greatly appreciated.

    Write to Dave Mottle, 532 East Ella, Coralles, NM 87048. He is the keeper of the clubs collection of factory accessory installation instructions. I'm pretty sure he has these for your car. There will be a charge for making copies and postage, probably just a few bucks.

      I think that general thought these days is that attaching seatbelts to the frame is a Bad Thing; if you're ever in a bad enough wreck to rip the body loose from the frame, the seatbelt won't be kind to you. (of course, by that point, you'll already be in a world of hurt, but still.)

      The later seatbelt installations just used holes in the floorpan with big washers; that's how I've installed them on my car.

      If you have a '62 (or was it '61?) or newer Studebaker, you already have the anchor points welded to the floorpan from the factory, with rubber plugs in them.

        i have a 59, so, no anchor points.... which is why i posted. thanks for the help!!!

          I have super big washers to help put the force over a larger area of the floor where the bolts holes are drilled.

            The newer seatbelt kits come with the big washers; alternately, some of the hot rod supply places sell special reinforcements that are supposedly less likely to tear the floorpan (i.e. not rip out) than simple grade 8 fender washers.

              Check the step-by-step how-to guides at http://www.julianos.com to see how this has been done in a variety of cars. They sell both 2-pt and 3-pt kits for seat belts and harnesses in their Catalog pages. If you just want lap belts, several of the Stude vendors have them with Stude logos on the buckles and you can use the reinforcing plates and bolts from Julianos. It's not that much extra work to put in a 3-pt system with a plate on the door post, and it might save your face from a horn emblem encounter if you get nailed some day.

                When my son turned 16 I bought a '55 Champion four door for him to drive. My wife insisted on seat belts (Yes, she was right). Like Gary I got the three point belts from Julianos. They worked great! Their anchor kit is much more substantial than mere large washers. The kits eased all of our minds as the 16 year old ventured out onto the streets.
                That said, we did find it very difficult to install the same type of kit in his '58 Silver Hawk. The pillar is not as wide as that of the sedan. We have not yet quite figured that out, but hope to before it is road worthy.
