    I have recently purchased replacement windlace from Studebaker International for my 1953 Starliner. "Rumor" has it that the windlace needs an extension of the fabric sewed on the back side to properly affix to the vehicle. Without it, the windlace pulls out easily.

    Looking at the vehicle, it appears that the extension would be required around the kickplates at the front of each door.

    Has anyone used this replacement windlace and could recommend where to install the fabric extension? If so, how much an extension do you need (2-3 inches)?

    Any help is appreciated.

    The windlace clips want to grab on to a rib along the welt. The modern repro stuff doesn't have a rib. As was recommended to me, I got a length of reproduction plastic fender welt and put the rib of the welt almost touching the windlace core. The rib on welt is about 3/16" wide and 1/4" high with a long flat tail. I sewed the welt to the windlace with a 40-year old Singer sewing machine I got at a yard sale for $20, stiching the welt through the flat part as close to the rib as I could get. About 8-10 stitches/inch is about right. [It's come in handy for a lot of Stude upholstery projects.] Then I trimmed off the flat edge of the welt so that about 1/2" of flat stuck out. That makes it about 3/4" from the edge of the welt core. The entension of the fabric from the core is just shy of 3/4", so I didn't cut into the fabric. You can use the edge of the fabric as a guide. The clips grab it just fine. Try a short length first and see if the clips can grip it. You may have to make the extension more than 3/4". I think the original was well over an inch.

          Phantom has very nice windlace that is just as Studebaker had manufactured it or whoever made up theirs. I purchased from Rene' and was completely satisfied. It is worth the little bit extra. You will even get the right color. Not generic as some supply. No hassle installation. jimmijim
