  • locking the doors

    I've had this 52 for 10 years now but have never driven it. Putting the doors all back together, trying to find the pieces, etc...

    How do the door locks work anyway? I have never known. Do you pull up to open the door - push down to lock...something like that?
    Or is the only way to lock / unlock the door using the key on the outside?

    Dan,

    From the tone of your post, I resume you are speaking of the INSIDE door handles? While I do not have any specific '52 car knowledge, I suspect they are just like the trucks of that era where you can push the inside handle to the locked position.

      Yea, inside of 52 car.
      The question stems from looking at the pile of parts that make up the door handle mechanism. The handle attaches to a swivel that seems to go either way. Then there is a long linkage assembly that pivots in the middle. Super complex thing-ama-bob that goes on the door at the rear. Plus the body striker plate. All of this is either rusty or greasy or both. Will take me a few weeks probably just to clean everything up.
      When it does go back together I won't know if it works the way it was supposed to unless I know what it did in the first place!

      It's tough assembly a Studebaker when you've never had or driven or even ridden in one before.

        Dan; the inside door handles are supposed to hang almost straight down, so that pushing them forward locks the door, neutral is unlocked and pulling them back opens the door.

          Not meaning to hijack the thread, but does this mean the doors can be locked by pushing the handle forward and then shutting the door? The locking mechanism on my Hawk is extremely stiff when attempting to use the key to lock them....but they unlock just fine.

          I'm always fearful of snapping the key off inside the tumbler some day.

            Karl; No that design ended in 1952 when they went to the new style handles, yours lock with the push up/down knobs from inside or the key from outside only. It is designed to help you NOT lock the keys inside! On four doors, it is still possible however, if you try!

            Your '62 inside handles should return to "neutral" after opening a door, if they are weak returning, the "remote" has a worn spring. It is the little unit that the handles attache to.

            Your "hard opening' problem is most likely the door latch needs lubrication or the linkage is binding inside the door, you also could help it by using lock lube in the cylinder keyhole.

              Does that mean I'll be able to lock the 50 Convertible with the door handle? If/when I ever get it put back together?

                Heh, that was my thinking too. Assuming I ever get this thing together, I am curious to know how it actually works. So you can lock the doors using the handle - sweet.

                  Actually, I think that when you close the door with it locked, when it shuts it will unluck. (Keeps you from locking your keys in the car. )

                  Or just do like I do with my truck:
                  When I rarely ever do lock the doors, I just leave the vent window unlocked. Reaching in to lock and unlock is no problem at all! But then again, who in their right mind would steal a bright orange Studebaker? [)]

                  FWIW, I hardly ever do lock them. Even at school the windows stay rolled down with the keys in the ignition. The joys of living in a small, rural town.

                    The keys are in the POR Looks Like Hell Hawk that is parked in my back yard as I type. I doubt anyone will want to go far sitting on a plastic milk crate!

                      The door locks are relatively simple.
                      (1)You cannot push the handle forward to lock the car.
                      (2)If the door is locked, pulling it towards you will unlock it.
                      (3)To lock, you must use either the key or push the button down.
                      (4)You cannot lock the car from the outside without the key, and the key mechanism needs to be working properly. Due to salt, no lubrication, and some of the metals used, lock mechanisms frequently do not work.
                      (5) You can take the lock apart and rekey fairly easily. I'm sure there are instructions somewhere on this site.
                      (6) The Shop Manual has lots of good pictures and instructions.

                        Paul; that would depend on which poster you are trying to answer, the original poster Dan has a '52 that does lock with the handles, and Karl who has a '62 that locks with push buttons! Actually both have been answered.

                          I think both have been answered too. If anyone is confused, 52 Studebakers do NOT have the door buttons like so many other cars have always had. Not sure when Stude went to this style.

                          Every other car I've ever had did have door lock buttons. But I've never had one this old. So i was really quite clueless about how the locks worked.
