If the GH has it's original DANA model 44 axle installed, it will fit fine, (updateexcept as David said, the ratio range must match!

However it requires that the pinion gear be removed and replaced with the replacement one from the Avanti and that requires a qualified rear axle technician (Jeep or 4 wheel drive shop) or some serious Manual reading to do the setup on the replacement Ring and Pinion gear. Whether or not you are changing ratio or using the complete matched set from the Avanti or the old R&P.

You do need to understand that the reason all this is necessary, is that Dana rear axles are not like Ford/GM ones, they are assembled in the housing piece by piece because they do not have removeable centersections (Pumpkins). [:0]

The only problem you might have is with the gear set. Dana 44s use one carrier for 3.92 and lower gears and a different carrier for 3.73 and higher gears. So if you are using the ring and pinion out of the Avanti it will work, but there might be a problem with using the Golden Hawk gears.
On a similar note you can buy a brand new limited slip assembly for a Dana 44 as long as you match the axle splines.

?? I bought a 3.07 Dana 44 to get rid of the 3.73 (w/automatic) in my Avanti. We unbolted the pumpkin from the 3.73 and replaced it with the 3.07 pumpkin we took out of the complete 3.07 rear end so we didn't have to go through the setup. I sold the 3.73 pumpkin as a unit to a man whose Dana mechanic asked him to look for a pumpkin so he didn't have to do all the set up.

53K, you must be talking about the Carrier, the center section of a Ford 9 inch is what is usually called the "Pumpkin".

If you swap that out, you have to remove the pinion from the case and I would think it would need to be set-up because all housings are not created equal!

Yes, it would be the carrier- bad nomenclature on my part (and that of many others). I guess we were lucky- everything worked fine except the pinion nut didn't get torqued enough. I had a bad whine starting our Route 66 Trip. We stopped in eastern KY and a 78-year old mechanic discovered the problem, tightened it more and the whine went away. This is the 3.73 that I sold.
