OK! Thanks, gentlemen! At least I now know what I have and not to mistake an "I"-for-an-"I", anymore!

    The I is a 1.
The engine is a 1963 Lark, Cruiser or Hawk 289 ci V8.

It looks like a 1963 289 according to Skip's table...

    http://studebakerdriversclub.com/V8EngineID.asp

The beginning 289 serial number that year was P93601. Your's is about the 9,000th one made in 1963.

The I is a 1 in all Stude engine stampings (and serial number plates)

What to make of this engine ID #?

I just started tearing down a 289 I acquired that is destined for my '53 Coupe restoration. I've checked what seems all possible sources (even Skip Lackie's) on engine ID's and I remain confused about interpreting the one on this engine. Here it is: PI02477. Is the "I" a "1"? If not, what does it stand for? Seems like too many characters. I know there are WAY too many of this kind of question on the Forum - sorry & thanks!
