  • Other: Need advice for locating a windshield for a 1965 Commander

I bought a 1965 Commander and I am having a hard time finding a windshield for it. Does anyone have any ideas?

Not knowing where you are I know there is a place west of the rockies but don't remember the name of the place but someone here will know. East of the rockies I do business with SDC member Phillips Classic Auto Glass. Poplar Bluff MO. 573 785-1927 or autoglass@acmenet.net He specializes in Studebaker auto glass. Most windshields are priced a little above or below $300.00, depending on application. Vic Phillips is a good guy to deal with and is fair priced.

Did you check with your local glass guy. I run a restoration shop in mn and my glass installer said he could get me a windsheild for a hawk.

I think that you need more than "Commander" for a description. For 1965, I believe that the Commander wagon took a different windshield than a Commander sedan. It seems like most any good glass outfit should be able to source that for you. Also, you could probably save a lot by using a used windshield.

While it is true that most any glass shop can source a windshield for a classic car, when I checked into this some years ago they quoted around $800.00 for a Hawk windshield, that I ultimately bought from Vic Phillips for $325.00. Since then I only buy from Vic Phillips for all my restorations.

41 Frank I think I would be looking for a new glass guy. I just had a new windsheild installed and he reinstalled the back glass on a 73 buick by my guy for just at $250. Had a new windsheild installed on a 77 jeep j-truck for $200. He said windsheilds are not a problem to get its the back glasses.

Guaranteed you would not get a Stude windshield that cheap. Go ahead and have them quote you one and report your results.

When I was planning on replacing the windshield in my '53 Coupe I intended to order from Phillips and install myself. Then I decided to have the local installer procure the glass and install. The glass they procured came from Phillips.
                  Couldn't be happier.

I've noticed that as well. If I needed one; new windshields are still available for my 1962 Lark Y body (4 door) which was also used on the 1961 sedans/wagons. Side glass apparently is no biggie since it's just flat stock and cut to fit. A rear window may be problematic though.

Also, the windshields are the same from 63-66 on non Hawk, or Avantis. Except, that Wagonaires and Convertibles are about an inch taller.

The 63 sedan 2dr or 4dr is the same as used in the 63-64 converts, and also the 64-66 wagons the 65-66 sedans use a different one it is a little shorter top to bottom, I just send one to NM. if any one wants to come and get all the curved back glass I have for the larks and any that will inter change for the early ones come and get it also have some curved front windshields not sure what they fit, all will be going to the dumps soon, will only keep c/k front and rear and same for the flat glass style larks, bring your truck have vent and side glass also, time to clean house, also the original post is from Salt Lake City I think SLC? he can get glass from Champ Glass in Idaho Russ Jenks 208-522-3835 every bid as nice as Vic. and a little closer

When I had Phillips ship me a windshield it went by truckline as a customer dock pickup. In my case it shipped ABF truck line.
