  • 3 spd bellhousing adapt

A friend of mine wanted to install a T-98 4 speed in his '57 pickup. I sold him the tranny but I didn't have a spare bellhousing. I'm sure someone else has done this already, but here goes anyway. He gave me his three speed housing and I redrilled the bolt pattern and bored the center out to fit the 4 speed. The bellhousings are the same except for the bolt pattern and the center locating hole. Worked great. I have the dimensions figured out if someone wants them. Here's a few pics. Red circles are the new 4spd pattern and the green are the old 3spd bolt pattern.

That's the housing that'll accept the 5 speed Ford OR Chevy 5 with OD 5th.

JP, which 5spds are those? And what do you mean by accepting those trannys? Is the center hole the proper size, or the length of the housing, bolt pattern? Just curious. Thanks.

I "think" the Ford will bolt up, maybe modify the center hole. I know you need the truck 5 speed bell housing.

The Borg Warner T5 5 speed Overdrive will fit with re-drilling 2 of the the mounting holes because the machined mounting surface is large enough for the T-98 truck 4 speed so you have space for the larger pattern T5's from Mustang and Camero to fit. One problem to be delt with is the rear engine mounts, which are only for trucks, not cars but can be made to work.

Can you tell, I care about Cameros and kittens?

Hey, I have a leftover truck bellhousing!

What do those T-5's cost out of the salvage yard. Are they only in Mustangs and Cameros?

A 5 speed would be more fun than a 3 speed provided I don't blow my whole parts budget for the next few years.

This thread has totally unravelled. :-)
BTW, if anyone needs a T98 4-speed (granny low) I have one you can have, provided you pay shipping. Given the weight of this stout rupture-maker, that should be about $75!
