How to tell a TT rear axle?

On a model 44, without pulling the differential cover, is there any way to tell if the rear axle is a TT?

Are you saying that yours has no 45B or 45C tag under a cover bolt on the right side of cover?

Two ways.
(a) Hard way. Jack up car. Put on jackstands. Rotate one wheel.
If the other rotates the same direction. TT.....
If it rotates the other direction... Open.

(b) Easy way. Pull diff cover fill plug.
Stick your finger in. If it goes in to the first knuckle. TT.
If it goes in to the second knuckle. Open...

(The TT carrier case is big enough to pretty much fill in the housing and it rides closer to the cover than an open carrier case)

Same as any other posi.

Jack up the rear of the car, turn one rear tire...the other tire will spin the SAME direction as the one you are turning if it's got a positraction carrier.

If the opposite tire spins the "opposite" direction, it's an open carrier.

Now.....it COULD have positraction and be worn out...and will act like an open rear end. SO...ultimatly...your best bet is to remove the cover to "actually" see what's in there.
Plus you'll be doing the axle a favor by renewing the axle with fresh fluid.

put transmission in low, increase engine speed to high RPM, dump clutch. Do you have both wheels spinning or not?

I have several loose model 44 rear axles without tags....they are not in a car and I really don't want to pull the covers off them all to figure out which ones are open or TT....

Use Jeff's method (b) - look in and reach into case to determine if there is a TT unit taking up space in there.

As Jeff said, it's really quite easy to see if it is TT. The carrier case is very close to the inside of the differential and is easily visible.

So are we talking about the oil fill hole in the pressed cover or the drain plug in the bottom of the cast case?

If there not mounted in a vehicle I would think it would be easy to spin one side and see which way the other side turns?!?
