  • Delco points

I have a window distrubitor on my V-8 289 Studebaker engine, distributor is off a 1964 Studebaker. Qusetion will the points for a V-6 or V-8 1964 Buick Skylark work? They are identical in all physical aspects. I guess are the question boils down to, are the condensors for the Buick V-6 or V-8 compatiable with Studebaker specs?

I just put a modern Delco distributer cap, points, distributer wires and coil on my '61 Cruiser, and they work just fine-completely put an end to the shutting down and stalling at low speeds once the engine heats up. My car also has the Studebaker 289 V8 engine in it. I got the parts from Advance Auto, so they were pretty basic, and I'd think that the one for the Buick would also work with the Stude, but you might want to check the numbers by a parts catalog that cross-references different makes and models of car just to be sure.

Pittbulllady, Auto Zone did not list a 1964 Studebaker point number. I'm glad all runs well with your points. Thanks for the information. Have a happy and safe Forth.

IIRC the Delco window distributor was only used in '61 (maybe '60?). If you took it off a '64, someone else put it there, not the factory.

Thanks, the car drives better than my '97 Toyota now(and definately LOOKS better). I still will probably need to either replace the starter or the bendix soon, though, since the starter has that sorta "lag" and that little noise(can't even begin to phonetically reproduce it, but if any of you have ever heard a tired starter, you know what I mean), but it does still start. No more running hot since the addition of the six-blade flex fan, either. That really only leaves the addition of seat belts, which aren't required by law in my state for a car of this age, but in some other states, they are, and I feel nekkid without 'em. Advance Auto has proven to be a great source of parts for these old cars, other than Studebaker-only things. Our local Advance Auto is one of the main sources of parts for people restoring old cars or "rat-rodding" them; their computer shows a lot of things in stock that fit a '61 Stude, but I don't know about a '64. If only they carried locking gas caps for the Cruiser, I'd be happy.

Not sure I buy that at all. There's way too many around for a one year distributor!! I'd bet it was from 61 or 62 "and newer".

While there may be slight differences in the actual ratings of different condensors...they are all close enough that ANY normal points type condensor will work with no ill effects. I've tried several in my 54 Conestoga as an experiment (from a "no it won't type statement!). Of the 6 or 7 I tried...nothing noticable...idle, acceleration or crusing speeds. All worked just fine.

I don't want to make this any more complicated, but often when the timing is a tad high, the starter will do that "lag" thing.

'62 and up all the distributors are listed as Prestolite.
The shop manual indicates the Delco distributor with the window is #1110969. The manual says this was used in '60 only. I can't say if that is actually what happened.

And in 1961 the Delco window type distributor was listed as 1100981 for the Lark and 1100980 Delco for the Hawk with the tach sending unit.

You have to remember Mike...there were one heck of a lot of '60 V-8 Larks built, and a fair amount of '61's. All '60-'61 V-8 Larks, NO Hawks had the Delco Window Dist. And every Stude. guy knew that a distributor with a Chev. top end would be a good thing for parts availability even back in the 1970's! Not to mention ease of point adjustment. [^] Lot's of them were salvaged.
