  • Engine: rebuilding specificaitons for a 1961-64 in line l-head engine

    We have just received an engine that needs to be overhauled and cannot find the clearances and
    the torque specs for valves, head, crank, cam, pistons, etc. Can somebody please help us?
    The engine was built between 1961 and 1964, L-head, inline six by Studebaker. Thank you!

    If I'm not mistaken all the engines built by Studebaker between 61 & 64 were overhead valve engines. The last flatheads were the 170 used in cars & the 245 found only in trucks. If you post the engine number found on the upper front of the block on the left side (same side as the distributor) we can most likely help more.

      The full shop manual, as well as chassis and body catalog, is available on CD. $25 from several of our fine Studebaker vendors. That would cover the 59-60 L-head in addition to the ohv six.
