  • Shelf life of oil

Because of the change in the formulation of diesel rated oils, I've been buying up all the CI rated 15W-40 Castrol diesel oil I can find here on MD's Eastern Shore. I now have 18 gallons of the stuff and planned to get more. But last night I read in the BlackHawk chapter's newsletter an article about oil that said "you can only store oils for about 2 years before their performance becomes suspect". True? If so, why? Is it the additives? Seems like oil should last a long time if the container isn't open. After all, it's been in the ground for millions of years. Any ideas on how long it can be stored? I'm hoping for 5-10 years.

Thank you JDP. Something I did not know.Always thought if you did not break the seal it would be good.

I guess the oil in the Tulsa Plymouth wouldn't be good!

Any way to tell how long it has been "shelved" before I buy it? Is there a mfg. date on the container - I've never looked for one. WalMart has a lot of CI-4 oil along side the same brand CJ-4.. I wonder if they're purchasing both at the same time, or is the CI older already?

Don't worry about it...the sky isn't falling, at least for the forseable future!
Just include a good additive like GM's EOS or the additive from Lucas Oil each oil change and all will be well.

I would think that some enterprising oil company would target the older car market with a taylored additive package. While it may not sell to the extent that common blends would, I think it would do reasonably well with the right advertising.

I suggest you contact Lubes'n'Greases magazine. They are a trade journal. I think this way you will get a professional opinion and not "hear say"

Paul; the CI-4 is the good stuff, they are closing it out, my store already has. So I wish I had bought it all! ...You still could! [^]

Just talked to an Oil Distributor in Duluth, MN this morning and asked if they had any of the older formulation left. He said in the packaged goods everything has been turned over - but in bulk - they are not yet seeing any of the new product. Specifically, we were talking about Shell Rotella T 15W40. So if you have the capability of handling bulk, he indicated that it should remain available for some time.

Its a shame the poor Stude engines only go 100k miles with the wrong oil. Just grin and roll along with me.
Since the "wrong oil" has only been since the additive package was changed a few months ago, I don't see how anyone can have 100K miles of experience with it in a Studebaker engine. I was up to 65K miles per year in the mid-'90s, but 100K in a half year is extreme.
