Wish to thank all that posted comments, It gave me the courage to get into it., Removed the locking mechanism and the exterrior handle and base, Lubed every moving part. Door can now be locked/unlocked from the exterror, feel a sligh binding but nothing to preclude the operation. Thanks again............

It is certainly possible that the complete door handle assemblies were swapped side-to-side when I had the doors off and disassembled for painting. I thought I had everything labeled so it would go back as it came off, but stranger things have been known to happen. I appologize if I posted incorrect informatioin. Tom

To: tomlewis,-------------- Your door locks are working well, and I personally would leave well enough alone, but the lock cylinders in Your Avanti are installed upside down, or perhaps the complete door handle assys. were swapped
side -to- side at one time.

Richard - My 63 Avanti's passenger door lock was broken when I got the car. Took it all apart and found a tiny pin on the back of the mechanism that ultimately unlocks the door, had broken off.
I was able to drill a hole where the pin came out and use a tiny hardened roll pin I bought at the local hardware store to take it's place. The teeth on my key face up, both sides. Go figure.

Will get into the doors thi spring with nicer weather, I'll set the passenge side lock up as yours ais, It's been 30 plus years since I fooled with them. My driverside door works AOK. key inserted with the flat side down, teeth up. Thanks again.

When I saw this thread I went out to the garage and checked the lock cylinders in both doors of my late '63 (R-4829) Avanti. Both passenger and driver's side keys insert flat side up, teeth down. Both lock by turning the tops of the key from the vertical toward the rear of the car to lock, and from the vertical toward the front of the car to unlock. I'm assuming this is correct because I have no latching or locking or unlocking problems. Tom

52 R agtop, If you still have the Avanti, would you key open/close the passenger door and look at the position of the key and let me know? Yes any thing applied to the mechanics of the operation of the door innereds is a plus.

I don't remember which way I put it back together, but, one way it did not work, the other way it did. I also used some silicone grease where the lock cylinder slides into the handle! The same as you would put on the caliper bushings on some cars. (imagine that) <G> You can buy a small packet at the parts store for a buck or so. I also used the silicone lube on my window regulators.

Is 52 Ragtop saying that the exposed face of the lock cylinder shoud be the oppisit of the one on the driver door? Driver door key is inserted blade down, teeth facing up. if rotated 180 degrees that will require the key to be inserted with the blade up and teeth facing down. IS THAT IT??

I think 52 Ragtop is on to the problem. He is referring to the cylinder being upside down or rotated 180 degrees. Remove the handle and lock cylinder and check it out.

For SN-60, Good it was also replaced but I'm not sure it is in the proper position even tho I followed the indents in the paint where the original came off.

For 52 Ragtop, Backwards? the SS face has to be out as it is larger than the core and sets into the handle base.

Check to make sure that the lock cylinder is installed properly in the handle, I seem to remember that you "could" put it in backwards (I did)

What condition is the door striker on the pillar in?

The passenger side door will not lock with the key. I travel with the inside lock in it's locked position, If I don't the door will unlatch, from body movement I guess. DRivers side works just fine. Door handle units were replaced with new ones when N&A were still building their Avanti in SB. I'm thinking some thing is not properly aligning itself with the piller post stud . all suggestions welcomed.
