The shop manual that I have doesn't show where power is obtained for cigarette lighter. The reason that I'm asking is that the bundle that the wire comes out of has a one time had a short in it, a number of wires are crispy critters, fan switch and defroster wires involved. on a 62 Hawk. Help Mr Wizard !! thanks in advance Lou Cote[8D]

Why not just run a new wire with an inline fuse or breaker?

My 1955 President diagram indicates a * 14 wire from the red ampmeter post to the cigar lighter. A #16 wire from the cigar lighter light to the instrument light switch. I would think an inline fuse would be advisable on the #14 wire.

Disconnect the battery, take out the ammeter, clean up the terminals and connections, reconnect carefully, and install a fusible link or circuit breaker at the main feed by the starter solenoid. The terminals at the ammeter and the ammeter itself are the weak links in the chain. Corrosion creates resistance which creates heat which will let the smoke out of all the wires! Not a good thing.

Complicated, sure I can do complicated.50 2r5 six volt positive system to an Archer(that old Radio Shack kit) 6-12 volt inverter to a 12 volt cigar lighter insulated and wired in reverse to run off of a 12 volt negative system (whew). Best of all, it even charges my cellphone, lol.

Quit smoking.
Use that electricity to save the planet
Follow the advice listed elsewhere in this thread.
A separate 'fused' wire isolated from the important circuits.

PS: As I checked into my 'smart guy' motel (Holiday Inn Express) tonight the guy next to me said he asked for a smoking room but was booked into a non-smoking room.
The desk gal said ALL their rooms were non-smoking.
I interjected that because they did not give this poor smoking schmuck a choice,
the least they could do was give him a freebie nicotine patch for the night....
You guessed it.. I got 'the look'

Clean ampmeter posts sound good! I think that is where my fire ( burned harness ) started. Too much resistance on the connection for the battery /ampmeter. I put a new ampmeter on, its posts were polished. I would think one could polish the amp post with fine steel wool with the gauge in place. That may not be possible on all years and models.
